Overview
Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli, also known as NLU Trichy, is the first National Law University in Tamil Nadu, established in 2012 by an Act of the state legislature. It admits students through CLAT and sits on a 25-acre campus at Navalurkuttappattu, near Tiruchirappalli. Courses offered at TNNLU
TNNLU offers two five-year integrated undergraduate law degrees, both admitted through CLAT: the flagship BA LLB (Hons) and a BCom LLB (Hons). At the postgraduate level it offers a one-year LLM in specialisations including corporate and securities law, intellectual property law and natural resources law through CLAT PG, along with PhD programmes. TNNLU eligibility criteria
For the BA LLB (Hons) and BCom LLB (Hons), you must have passed class 12 or an equivalent examination with at least 45 percent marks, or 40 percent for candidates in the SC and ST categories. Candidates awaiting their class 12 results may apply and appear for CLAT, subject to meeting the requirement at admission, and there is no upper age limit. For the LLM, you need an LLB degree with at least 50 percent marks, or 45 percent for SC and ST candidates.
TNNLU admission process and how to apply
TNNLU admits students to the BA LLB, BCom LLB and LLM only through CLAT, run by the Consortium of National Law Universities. Register for CLAT on the Consortium website during the application window, appear for the exam, and after results take part in the centralised CLAT counselling, placing TNNLU high in your preference order. Tamil Nadu home-state candidates should claim the state quota with the required documents, and a small number of NRI and OCI seats are filled through CLAT under a separate quota. If a seat is allotted, you report to the Tiruchirappalli campus for document verification and fee payment.
TNNLU seats and reservation
TNNLU has a total intake of about 183 seats across its programmes, with around 120 in the BA LLB (Hons) alongside the BCom LLB (Hons) and LLM. A significant share of seats is reserved for Tamil Nadu home-state candidates, and seats are further reserved vertically for the SC, ST, OBC and other applicable categories, with horizontal reservation for persons with disabilities, plus a small NRI and OCI quota. The home-state quota makes Tamil Nadu domicile seats close at more relaxed ranks than the all-India list.

TNNLU is a mid-tier NLU by cutoff. In the general all-India category, its BA LLB (Hons) has closed within roughly the top 1370 to 1763 CLAT ranks in recent years, with the round one general rank around 1370 in 2026 and a 2025 closing near 1763. The BCom LLB closes slightly higher, and Tamil Nadu home-state seats close at more relaxed ranks. TNNLU has one of the lowest fee structures of any NLU, which is a major part of its appeal. The five-year BA LLB (Hons) tuition works out to roughly 3 lakh rupees in total, among the most affordable of any National Law University, with hostel, mess and other charges added separately, and the one-year LLM costs about 2.5 lakh rupees.
