Overview
The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, is the first and only National Law University in Kerala, established in 2005 under an Act of the Kerala legislature. Formerly the National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, it admits students through CLAT and sits on a compact campus in the Kinfra Hi-Tech Park at Kalamassery, close to the Kerala High Court. NUALS is a small-batch NLU known for a specialised curriculum, a strong median placement for those who enter corporate roles, and a large share of graduates who head into litigation and the judiciary. This profile covers its ranking, courses, eligibility, admission, seats, cutoff, fees, hostel, scholarships and placements.
Ranking and reputation of NUALS Kochi
NUALS was ranked 38th in the NIRF 2024 law category, with a score of 47.96, and was placed ninth by India Today and 26th by IIRF in 2024. As Kerala's only NLU, it holds a distinctive position in the state's legal education, and its proximity to the Kerala High Court gives students strong exposure to courts and chambers. Its reputation rests on a focused, specialised academic offering and solid outcomes for a small institution.
Courses offered at NUALS Kochi
NUALS's flagship programme is the five-year integrated BA LLB (Hons), admitted through CLAT. At the postgraduate level it offers a one-year LLM in specialisations such as international trade law and constitutional and administrative law through CLAT PG. It also runs PG Diplomas in areas including cyber law, insurance law, banking law, medical law and education law, along with PhD programmes. Most CLAT aspirants target the BA LLB, which is the focus of the sections below unless stated otherwise.
NUALS Kochi eligibility criteria
For the BA LLB (Hons), you must have passed class 12 or an equivalent examination with at least 45 percent marks, or 40 percent for candidates in the SC and ST categories. Candidates awaiting their class 12 results may apply and appear for CLAT, subject to meeting the requirement at admission, and there is no upper age limit. For the LLM, you need an LLB degree with at least 50 percent marks, or 45 percent for SC and ST candidates.
NUALS Kochi admission process and how to apply
NUALS admits students to the BA LLB and LLM only through CLAT, run by the Consortium of National Law Universities. Register for CLAT on the Consortium website during the application window, appear for the exam, and after results take part in the centralised CLAT counselling, placing NUALS high in your preference order. Kerala domicile candidates should claim the state merit quota with the required documents. If a seat is allotted, you report to the Kochi campus for document verification and fee payment. PhD admissions are handled through the university's own entrance test and interview.
NUALS Kochi seats and reservation
NUALS is a small-batch NLU, with 60 seats in the BA LLB (Hons) and 60 seats in the one-year LLM. Seats are reserved for All India and Kerala state merit candidates, along with vertical reservation for the SEBC, SC and ST categories and horizontal reservation for persons with disabilities. The small intake means the effective competition is high, and the state merit quota makes Kerala domicile seats more accessible than the all-India list.
NUALS Kochi CLAT cutoff
NUALS is a mid-tier NLU by cutoff, kept competitive by its small intake. In the general all-India category, its BA LLB (Hons) has closed within roughly the top 1050 to 1200 CLAT ranks in the recent cycle, with the round one general rank around 1076 in 2026, extending to about 1154 in later rounds, and the Kerala home-state rank a little higher. Reserved categories close at more relaxed ranks. The exact closing rank moves each year with the applicant pool and counselling movement, so treat any single figure as indicative. To check whether your expected rank is in range, use the CLAT college predictor, and see the NLU cut-offs page for round by round closing ranks.
NUALS Kochi fees
NUALS is moderately priced for an NLU. The total fee for the five-year BA LLB (Hons) is about 9.96 lakh rupees, with hostel charged separately at about 30,000 rupees, which covers hostel rent and amenities. The manageable fee, set against a strong median for placed students, makes NUALS reasonable on cost.
| Fee component (BA LLB) | Approximate amount |
|---|---|
| Five-year total | About 9.96 lakh rupees |
| Hostel | About 30,000 rupees |

NUALS Kochi hostel and campus
NUALS occupies a roughly 10-acre campus in the Kinfra Hi-Tech Park at Kalamassery, with hostel accommodation, a well-stocked library holding Indian and foreign legal texts and reports, a moot court, modern classrooms, computer labs, a gym, an auditorium and sports facilities. Its location in Kochi, the seat of the Kerala High Court, gives students strong access to courts, chambers and internships, which supports its litigation and judiciary orientation.
Scholarships at NUALS Kochi
NUALS offers UGC and government scholarships, along with merit-based and need-based support, and SC and ST students can access fee reimbursements. Read each year's official notification for the current eligibility bands and amounts.
NUALS Kochi placements: packages and outcomes
NUALS has a solid median placement for those who enter corporate roles. In the NIRF data its median undergraduate package was about 15 lakh rupees a year, and its median LLM package was about 10.5 lakh rupees. The undergraduate placement rate, however, is modest at around 46 percent, because a large share of students in Kerala pursue litigation, the judiciary and higher studies rather than corporate placements, so the placement rate understates the range of career outcomes. Placement is coordinated by the university's placement cell through training and recruitment activities. For how NUALS compares with the other NLUs, see the NLU placements comparison.
| Placement metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median UG package, NIRF | About 15 LPA |
| Median LLM package | About 10.5 LPA |
| UG placement rate | About 46 percent |

How to get into NUALS Kochi
Because NUALS closes within roughly the top 1100 to 1200 general-category ranks for the BA LLB, it is a realistic target for a solid CLAT score, and the Kerala state merit quota helps home-state candidates.
