Overview
Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar, is one of India's premier National Law Universities and completes the top five in the NIRF 2025 law list, where it climbed three places to rank fifth with a score of 76.23. Established in 2003 under the Gujarat National Law University Act, it sits on a 50-acre campus in the Knowledge Corridor at Koba, Gandhinagar, and admits students through CLAT. GNLU stands out for the widest range of integrated law degrees of any NLU, a large green campus, and a second campus at Silvassa. This profile covers its ranking, courses, eligibility, admission, seats, cutoff, fees, hostel, scholarships and placements.
Why GNLU Gandhinagar is among the top NLUs
GNLU is the fastest riser in the premier group, moving from eighth to fifth in the NIRF 2025 law ranking, and it was placed third by The Week, Outlook and India Today in 2025. It performs strongly on graduation outcomes and perception, backed by a broad academic offering, an active research and moot culture, and a large modern campus. That momentum has lifted both its cutoff and its recruiter interest in recent years.
Courses offered at GNLU Gandhinagar
GNLU offers the broadest spread of integrated law programmes among the NLUs, all admitted through CLAT. Beyond the flagship five-year BA LLB (Hons), it runs BCom LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), BSc LLB (Hons) and BSW LLB (Hons), which blends law with social work. At the postgraduate level it offers a one-year LLM through CLAT PG, an MBA through management entrance tests, and PhD and PG Diploma programmes. Most CLAT aspirants target the BA LLB, which is the focus of the sections below unless stated otherwise.
| Programme | Level | Entrance exam |
|---|---|---|
| BA LLB (Hons), five-year | UG | CLAT |
| BCom LLB (Hons), five-year | UG | CLAT |
| BBA LLB (Hons), five-year | UG | CLAT |
| BSc LLB (Hons), five-year | UG | CLAT |
| BSW LLB (Hons), five-year | UG | CLAT |
| LLM, one-year | PG | CLAT PG |
GNLU Gandhinagar eligibility criteria
For the integrated UG law programmes, including the BA LLB (Hons), you must have passed class 12 or an equivalent examination with at least 45 percent marks, or 40 percent for candidates in the SC and ST categories. Candidates awaiting their class 12 results may apply and appear for CLAT, subject to meeting the requirement at admission, and there is no upper age limit. For the LLM, you need an LLB degree with at least 50 percent marks, or 45 percent for SC and ST candidates.
GNLU Gandhinagar admission process and how to apply
GNLU admits students to its integrated UG law programmes and the LLM only through CLAT, run by the Consortium of National Law Universities. Register for CLAT on the Consortium website during the application window, appear for the exam, and after results take part in the centralised CLAT counselling, placing GNLU high in your preference order. GNLU runs two campuses, Gandhinagar and Silvassa, which appear as separate preferences in CLAT counselling, so choose carefully. If a seat is allotted, you report to the campus for document verification and hostel allotment. Admission is purely on CLAT merit. The main campus is at Attalika Avenue, Knowledge Corridor, Koba, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
GNLU Gandhinagar seats and reservation
GNLU offers about 120 seats in its flagship BA LLB (Hons) at the Gandhinagar campus, alongside seats in its other integrated UG law programmes and the LLM, and a further intake at its Silvassa campus. The university reserves 25 percent of seats for Gujarat domicile candidates across all categories except EWS, and seats are reserved vertically for the SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories, with a horizontal reservation for persons with disabilities. Because the number of seats a general all-India candidate competes for is limited once domicile and reservation are applied, the effective competition is strong.
GNLU Gandhinagar CLAT cutoff
GNLU is a competitive NLU to enter. In the general all-India category, its BA LLB (Hons) has closed within roughly the top 400 to 460 CLAT ranks in recent years, with the round one general closing rank around 376 to 402 in 2026 and around 404 to 443 in 2025. Reserved categories close at more relaxed ranks, and Gujarat domicile seats are more accessible than the all-India list. The exact closing rank moves each year with the applicant pool, seat revisions and counselling movement, so treat any single figure as indicative. To check whether your expected rank is in range, use the CLAT college predictor, and see the NLU cut-offs page for round by round closing ranks.

The Knowledge Corridor location keeps the campus connected to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar for internships and events.
