Direct answer

The Prime Minister of India does not have a separate salary law. The PM is paid as a Member of Parliament plus a small ministerial allowance. From 1 April 2023 (notified on 24 March 2025), that means a basic salary of ₹1,24,000 a month, a sumptuary allowance of ₹3,000 a month, a constituency allowance of ₹70,000 a month and a daily allowance of ₹2,500. Counted the way most websites count it, the PM’s gross monthly pay works out to about ₹2.72 lakh, or roughly ₹32.8 lakh a year. The ₹1.6 lakh figure you see on most sites is the pre-2018 structure and is out of date.

Key takeaways

  • Current basic pay: ₹1,24,000 a month, the same basic salary every MP gets, effective 1 April 2023.
  • PM-only addition: a sumptuary (hospitality) allowance of ₹3,000 a month under Section 5 of the Salaries and Allowances of Ministers Act, 1952.
  • Estimated gross monthly pay: about ₹2,72,000 when basic pay, sumptuary allowance, constituency allowance and 30 days of daily allowance are added together.
  • Old figure: ₹1,60,000 a month (₹19.2 lakh a year) comes from the 2010 era structure of ₹50,000 basic pay. Many pages still print it, sometimes as ₹1.66 lakh.
  • Tax: the basic salary is taxable. Daily and constituency allowances are exempt under Section 10(17) of the Income Tax Act.
  • Biggest perks: rent-free furnished residence at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, SPG protection, Air India One aircraft, travel and free medical care for the PM and family.
  • After office: former PMs get the MP pension (₹31,000 a month plus ₹2,500 for each year beyond five as an MP) and SPG cover for five years.
  • Who earns more: the President (₹5 lakh), Vice President (₹4 lakh) and Governors (₹3.5 lakh) all have a higher fixed salary than the PM’s basic pay.

What Is the Salary of the Prime Minister of India?

According to Law Prep Tutorial’s reading of the 2025 notification and the Ministers’ Act, the Indian Prime Minister’s salary is ₹1,24,000 a month in basic pay, plus a ₹3,000 sumptuary allowance, a ₹70,000 constituency allowance and a daily allowance of ₹2,500. Added together for a 30-day month, the PM’s gross pay is about ₹2.72 lakh a month.

That short answer hides the part most people find surprising. India’s Prime Minister does not draw a “Prime Minister’s salary” as a single fixed number. The Constitution leaves the pay of ministers to Parliament, and Parliament’s law, the Salaries and Allowances of Ministers Act, 1952, says a minister gets the same salary and daily allowance as a Member of Parliament. On top of that, each minister gets a sumptuary allowance that depends on rank. The Prime Minister gets the highest one.

So whether you search “salary of India PM”, “PM of India salary per month”, “salaries of PM”, “payment of PM” or “pradhan mantri ka vetan kitna hai”, the honest answer always has two layers:

  1. The MP layer. Salary, daily allowance and constituency allowance under the Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954.

  2. The minister layer. The sumptuary allowance under the Salaries and Allowances of Ministers Act, 1952, plus perks like a rent-free house, travel and medical care.

Everything below builds on these two layers.

Hindi mein jawab (answer in Hindi): Bharat ke Pradhanmantri ki salary kitni hai? Pradhan mantri salary ka mool hissa ₹1,24,000 prati maah hai, jo har saansad (MP) ko milta hai. Iske upar ₹3,000 sumptuary allowance, ₹70,000 constituency allowance aur ₹2,500 prati din daily allowance milta hai. Isliye pradhanmantri ka vetan kitna hota hai, iska seedha jawab hai: lagbhag ₹2.72 lakh prati maah (sabhi bhatte milakar). Narendra Modi ka salary kitna hai, yeh bhi yahi hai, kyunki pradhanmantri salary pad ke saath judi hoti hai, vyakti ke saath nahi.

Indian Prime Minister Salary Per Month: Component-Wise Breakdown (2026)

A few things to keep in mind when reading this table:

  • The daily allowance is not a flat monthly payment. Under the MPs’ law it is paid per day, so the monthly total moves with the number of days counted. We used 30 days so the method matches the one behind the older ₹1.6 lakh figure, which multiplied ₹2,000 by 31 days.

  • The office expense allowance is not personal pay. Business Standard reported the MP office allowance at ₹60,000 a month in 2025. It covers staff and office costs, so we have left it out of the salary total, as most official explanations do.

  • No official “PM pay slip” is published. The ₹2.72 lakh figure is Law Prep Tutorial’s own calculation from the notified rates. It is the most accurate estimate available, but it is still an estimate.

What is the Prime Minister’s fixed pay without allowances?

If you only count the parts that do not depend on days (basic salary, sumptuary allowance and constituency allowance), the PM’s fixed monthly pay is ₹1,97,000. If you count only the taxable basic salary and sumptuary allowance, it is ₹1,27,000.

Why Most Websites Say ₹1.6 Lakh (and Why That Is Outdated)

If you have searched “PM monthly salary in India” before, you have probably seen ₹1.6 lakh or ₹1.66 lakh. That number is real, but it belongs to an older pay structure. It was built like this:

Old component (2010 era, as most sites list it)

Amount

Basic salary

₹50,000

Sumptuary allowance

₹3,000

Daily allowance (₹2,000 x 31)

₹62,000

Constituency allowance

Total

₹1,60,000 a month (₹19.2 lakh a year)

Two revisions have happened since then:

  1. April 2018. The Finance Act, 2018 raised MP basic pay from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 and set up automatic revision every five years based on the Cost Inflation Index. The constituency allowance rose to ₹70,000 in the same 2018 revision.

  2. March 2025. Using that five-year formula, the government notified a 24% rise in basic pay to ₹1,24,000, backdated to 1 April 2023. The daily allowance went from ₹2,000 to ₹2,500.

Because the PM’s salary is tied to an MP’s salary, both revisions raised the PM’s pay too. Pages that still quote ₹1.6 lakh are describing the pay of 2010 to 2018, not 2026.

On top of this MP layer, the PM’s sumptuary allowance has stood at ₹3,000 a month, apart from the one-year COVID cut to ₹2,100 in 2020-21.

The 30% COVID-19 pay cut

On 6 April 2020, the Union Cabinet decided that the Prime Minister, all Union ministers and all MPs would take a 30% cut in salary for one year from 1 April 2020. An ordinance, later replaced by a law, amended the MPs’ Salary Act to bring the basic salary down from ₹1,00,000 to ₹70,000. A separate amendment to the Ministers’ Act cut the PM’s sumptuary allowance from ₹3,000 to ₹2,100. The President, Vice President and Governors took the same cut voluntarily. The MP Local Area Development Scheme was also suspended for two years to free up about ₹7,900 crore.

Some pages still describe a permanent “30% deduction” from the PM’s salary. That is wrong. The cut applied for one year only.

The 2025 hike and two years of arrears

Because the March 2025 notification was backdated to 1 April 2023, every MP, including the Prime Minister, became entitled to arrears for the 24 months in between. At ₹24,000 a month extra, that works out to ₹5,76,000 in arrears on basic pay alone.

When will the PM’s salary be revised next?

The 2018 rule revises MP salary, daily allowance and pension every five years on the basis of the Cost Inflation Index. The last revision took effect from 1 April 2023, so the five-year cycle points to the next revision falling due from 1 April 2028.

PM Narendra Modi Salary: What Modi Actually Earns

Searches for “PM Narendra Modi salary”, “salary of Modi”, “Modi salary per month”, “Narendra Modi monthly salary”, “PM Modi monthly salary” and “Modi ki salary kitni hai” are all asking the same question, and the answer is the same as above. Narendra Modi draws the salary attached to the office, which is ₹1,24,000 basic pay plus the allowances in the breakdown, for an estimated gross of about ₹2.72 lakh a month. There is no separate “Modi salary”.

In short, the salary of Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is the salary of the office. What makes Modi’s case interesting is what his public records show.

Modi’s declared income and assets

In his 2024 Lok Sabha election affidavit from Varanasi, as reported by Business Standard, Narendra Modi declared:

Item

Declared value

Total assets

₹3.02 crore

Fixed deposits with SBI

₹2,85,60,338

Taxable income, FY 2018-19

about ₹11.1 lakh

Taxable income, FY 2022-23

₹23,56,080

For comparison, he declared ₹1.66 crore in 2014 and ₹2.51 crore in 2019.

Does Modi donate his salary?

Modi has made several documented donations from his personal savings, according to a 2020 report carried by Business Standard:

  • ₹21 lakh in 2014 for the education of daughters of Gujarat government staff, when he left the Chief Minister’s office.

  • ₹21 lakh in 2019 to a welfare fund for sanitation workers at the Kumbh Mela.

  • ₹2.25 lakh in 2020 to the PM CARES Fund for COVID-19 relief.

Separately, money from auctions of gifts he received as Chief Minister and Prime Minister, over ₹100 crore by that report, went to causes such as Namami Gange and girl child education. That money came from gift auctions, not from his salary.

Perks and Facilities of the Prime Minister of India

For most searchers, the perks matter more than the pay slip. The Ministers’ Act and later laws give the Prime Minister these facilities.

1. Official residence: 7 Lok Kalyan Marg

Section 4 of the Ministers’ Act entitles every minister to a furnished residence without paying rent for the whole term and one month after it, with maintenance paid by the government. The Prime Minister’s residence is 7 Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi. The road was called Race Course Road until it was renamed in September 2016.

2. SPG security

The Special Protection Group protects the serving Prime Minister and the immediate family members living at the official residence. SPG cover is a security cost borne by the state, not part of the PM’s pay.

3. Air India One

Since 2020, the Prime Minister, President and Vice President fly on custom Boeing 777-300ER aircraft called Air India One. The first one was delivered in September 2020. It carries a self-protection suite with missile countermeasures, plus office space, meeting rooms and a medical centre.

4. Travel for self and family

The Ministers’ Act provides travelling allowances for the minister and family members for official journeys and tours.

5. Free medical care

The same Act entitles a minister and family members to free hospital accommodation and medical treatment.

6. Staff, vehicles and office

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) supplies the official staff. The official transport and convoy come with SPG cover, so the PM does not need to buy or maintain a personal car.

What Does a Former Prime Minister Get? Pension and Post-Retirement Benefits

“PM pension after retirement” is one of the most common follow-up questions. There is no special “PM pension” law. A former Prime Minister gets:

  • The MP pension. From 1 April 2023, every former MP gets ₹31,000 a month (up from ₹25,000). For each year of service beyond five years, an extra ₹2,500 a month is added (up from ₹2,000).

  • SPG protection for five years. The SPG (Amendment) Act, 2019 limits SPG cover for a former PM, and for immediate family living with them at the allotted residence, to five years after leaving office. That amendment replaced the earlier one-year rule.

  • Staff and office support. An RTI reply from 2010 recorded that former PMs get secretarial staff and office expenses without limit for the first five years, and ₹6,000 a month after that.

  • Government accommodation in Delhi, which former PMs have used as their post-office residence.

Is the Indian Prime Minister’s Salary Taxable?

Yes, partly. Under Section 10(17) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, the daily allowance and constituency allowance received by MPs are exempt. The basic salary is not covered by that exemption and is taxable.

For the Prime Minister, that means:

  • Taxable: ₹1,24,000 basic pay (₹14.88 lakh a year) and the sumptuary allowance.

  • Tax-free: the ₹70,000 constituency allowance and the ₹2,500 daily allowance.

  • Not taxed as income because they are not paid in cash: the residence, security, aircraft and medical care.

This explains why Modi’s declared taxable income (₹23.56 lakh in FY 2022-23) is higher than his basic pay alone. Income from interest on his fixed deposits is taxable too.

A common surprise: the Prime Minister’s fixed salary is lower than that of the President, the Vice President, every Governor and even India’s senior-most civil servant. That is because constitutional heads have their own salary laws, while the PM’s pay is tied to an MP’s.

Before the 2018 increase, the President earned ₹1.5 lakh, less than the Cabinet Secretary’s ₹2.5 lakh after the 7th Pay Commission. That anomaly is what triggered the 2018 revision.

PM vs cabinet ministers: minister salary in India follows the same rule as the PM’s. Every Union minister, including the Finance Minister, gets the same ₹1,24,000 MP basic salary as the PM. The only pay difference is the sumptuary allowance: ₹3,000 for the PM, ₹2,000 for a Cabinet Minister, ₹1,000 for a Minister of State and ₹600 for a Deputy Minister.

PM vs Chief Ministers: CM salaries are set by each state’s own law, and several states pay their Chief Minister more than the PM’s basic salary. That is why “Why does the PM earn less than a CM?” is a frequent question. CM pay deserves its own detailed comparison rather than a line here.

Indian PM Salary vs World Leaders

India pays its head of government far less than most large economies. In September 2025, Daily Jagran (drawing on NDTV) compared annual pay in rupees:

Country

Head of government’s annual pay (approx.)

Singapore

₹13.68 crore

United States

₹3.32 crore

Australia

₹3.24 crore

Canada

₹2.42 crore

Japan

₹2.12 crore

India

about ₹32.8 lakh (Law Prep Tutorial’s estimate at 2023 rates)

Exchange rates change these rupee figures every month, and leaders change too. The broad pattern holds: India’s PM earns a small fraction of what peers in rich democracies earn, but the perks (housing, security, travel) are fully paid by the state.

Who Decides the Prime Minister’s Salary?

The Prime Minister cannot set their own pay. Article 75(6) of the Constitution leaves the salaries of ministers to Parliament, which set them through the Ministers’ Act, 1952. Since that Act ties a minister’s pay to an MP’s, and the 2018 Finance Act made MP pay revise automatically with the Cost Inflation Index every five years, the PM’s pay now changes only through:

  1. The five-year automatic revision (as in 2025, backdated to 2023), or

  2. A law passed by Parliament (as in the 2020 COVID cut).

Five Common Myths About the PM’s Salary

Law Prep Tutorial reviewed the pages that rank for this topic and found the same mistakes repeated again and again. Here they are, corrected.

Myth 1: “The PM earns ₹1.66 lakh a month.” This comes from the 2010 era structure. The components listed with it (₹50,000 basic, ₹3,000 sumptuary, ₹62,000 daily allowance and ₹45,000 constituency allowance) add up to ₹1,60,000, not ₹1,66,000, and the basic pay behind it was replaced in 2018 and again from 2023.

Myth 2: “30% of the PM’s salary is deducted every month.” The 30% cut was a one-year COVID-19 measure from April 2020. It is not a permanent deduction for provident fund or pension, and there is no such deduction today.

Myth 3: “The PM has a separate, higher salary than ministers.” The PM draws exactly the same basic salary as every Union minister and MP. The only cash difference is the sumptuary allowance, where the PM’s ₹3,000 is ₹1,000 more than a Cabinet Minister’s.

Myth 4: “The PM decides their own salary.” Pay is set by Acts of Parliament. Since 2018, MP pay (and so the PM’s) is revised automatically every five years on the Cost Inflation Index, so no individual Prime Minister chooses the number.

Myth 5: “The PM gets a special lifetime pension.” There is no PM-specific pension. A former PM gets the same pension as any former MP, plus time-limited SPG cover and staff support.

How to Remember This for Exams (GK Quick Revision)

If you are preparing for UPSC, SSC, bank or state PSC exams, these are the facts most often tested:

  • PM’s salary law: Salaries and Allowances of Ministers Act, 1952, read with the MPs’ Salary Act, 1954.

  • PM’s basic pay: ₹1,24,000 a month from 1 April 2023, notified 24 March 2025.

  • PM’s sumptuary allowance: ₹3,000 a month (Section 5).

  • MP pay revision: every five years, indexed to the Cost Inflation Index (Finance Act, 2018).

  • COVID cut: 30%, for one year from 1 April 2020.

  • PM’s residence: 7 Lok Kalyan Marg (renamed from Race Course Road in 2016).

  • Former PM’s SPG cover: five years (SPG Amendment Act, 2019).

  • President’s salary: ₹5 lakh; Vice President ₹4 lakh; Governor ₹3.5 lakh.

Conclusion

The salary of the Indian Prime Minister is modest on paper and generous in kind. The PM’s basic pay is ₹1,24,000 a month, the same as any MP, and the full cash package is an estimated ₹2.72 lakh a month, or about ₹32.8 lakh a year. The real value of the office lies in what the state provides directly: a rent-free official home, SPG security, Air India One, travel and medical care. The old ₹1.6 lakh number is a relic of the 2010 pay structure. With automatic revision every five years, the next change is due from April 2028, and Law Prep Tutorial will update this page when it is notified.
