AILET exam pattern, and why older papers look different
The current AILET UG pattern, in force from 2023, has 150 multiple choice questions to be solved in 120 minutes. Marking is 1 mark per correct answer and 0.25 deducted per wrong answer. The paper has three sections:
Section | Questions | Marks |
English Language | 50 | 50 |
Logical Reasoning | 70 | 70 |
Current Affairs and General Knowledge | 30 | 30 |
Before 2023, AILET followed a five-section pattern that also tested Legal Aptitude and Elementary Mathematics, and earlier papers ran for 90 minutes. This is the single most important thing to know before you practise: an AILET 2019 paper will contain question types the current exam no longer asks. Treat papers from 2023 to 2026 as your real mock exams, and use pre-2023 papers only to drill English, Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge topics that still appear.
The LLM (PG) paper follows its own structure of about 100 questions in 120 minutes, so PG aspirants should practise the PG papers, not the UG ones.
How to use AILET previous year papers effectively
Downloading the papers is easy. Getting a score out of them takes a method:
Solve full papers under exam conditions. Set a 120 minute timer and attempt all 150 questions in one sitting, so you train real exam pacing and stamina.
Analyse before you celebrate the score. After each paper, break your result down by section and by topic. A raw score tells you little; knowing you lose marks in Logical Reasoning tells you what to fix.
Respect the negative marking. Because each wrong answer costs 0.25, practise judging when to skip. Past papers are where you learn your own accuracy line.
Prioritise the last three to four years. Papers from 2023 to 2026 reflect the current pattern exactly, so attempt each of them two to three times as your main mocks.
Mine older papers for topics, not format. Use 2008 to 2022 papers to build depth in English, Logical Reasoning and General Knowledge, and simply skip the Legal Aptitude and Mathematics parts that are no longer tested.
Review with worked solutions. Read the reasoning for every question you got wrong or guessed, not just the answer key, so you close the gap instead of repeating it.
AILET sample papers vs previous year papers
Both are useful, and they do different jobs. A previous year question paper is an authentic paper that NLU Delhi actually set, so it is the truest guide to real difficulty and question style. An AILET sample paper is a practice paper built to mirror the current pattern, which is helpful when you have already solved the recent real papers and want more sets to practise on.
A simple plan: start with the last four previous year papers to learn the real exam, then move to sample papers and full-length mock tests for extra volume in the weeks before AILET 2027. Sample papers are also the better choice for drilling the current three-section format, since every sample paper follows it, whereas older real papers do not.
