AILET exam date

NLU Delhi confirmed the AILET 2027 exam date as December 13, 2026 in the official notification released on July 23, 2026. The exam runs in a single shift from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in offline, pen and paper mode.

AILET is scheduled one week after CLAT every year so that candidates sitting both exams are not forced to choose. CLAT 2027 falls on December 6, 2026, and AILET 2027 follows on December 13, 2026, keeping that one week gap for the third year running.

What is AILET?

The full form of AILET is the All India Law Entrance Test. It is a national-level law entrance exam conducted by National Law University Delhi for admission to its five-year BA LLB (Hons), one-year LLM, and PhD programmes.

AILET is unique among law entrance exams. NLU Delhi does not participate in CLAT and does not accept CLAT scores. AILET is the single gateway to NLU Delhi, which makes it one of the most competitive law exams in India, with more than 20,000 candidates typically competing for around 120 BA LLB seats. A handful of other private law colleges also accept AILET scores, but the exam exists primarily for NLU Delhi admission.

AILET registration and application form

AILET 2027 registration opened on August 7, 2026, and the last date to submit the application form is November 10, 2026. The entire process is online through the official NLU Delhi website. The candidate login for form filling, admit card, and result is on the same portal.

Steps to fill the AILET application form:

1. Visit the official website, nationallawuniversitydelhi.in, and open the AILET 2027 registration link.

2. Register with your name, email, and mobile number to create your login.

3. Log in and enter your personal, academic, and category details, and select your preferred exam cities.

4. Upload a scanned photograph, signature, and the required documents within the stated size limits.

5. Pay the application fee online.

6. Submit the form and save a printout for your records.

Apply a few days before the deadline. Last day traffic and payment failures are common and can cost you the form.

AILET eligibility criteria

Eligibility depends on the programme you are applying for. There is no upper age limit for any AILET programme.

BA LLB (Hons): Pass Class 12 with at least 45 percent marks for General category, 42 percent for OBC, and 40 percent for SC, ST, and PwD candidates. Students awaiting their Class 12 results are also eligible to apply.

LLM: Hold an LLB or an equivalent law degree from a recognised university, meeting the minimum aggregate set in the official notification. Final year LLB students are eligible to appear.

PhD in Law: Hold an LLM or an equivalent postgraduate law degree from a recognised university with the minimum marks stated in the notification.

AILET exam pattern

The AILET BA LLB exam pattern has stayed stable, and NLU Delhi has not announced any change for 2027. Treat any “new pattern” claims circulating online as unconfirmed until they appear in the official notification.

AILET PG (LLM) exam pattern: The LLM paper carries 100 objective questions of one mark each, in the same 120 minute offline format. The earlier descriptive section has been removed, so the LLM paper is now fully multiple choice.

AILET syllabus

• English Language: reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, sentence correction, and inference from passages.

• Current Affairs and General Knowledge: national and international events, awards, sports, and static general knowledge, with emphasis on the year leading up to the exam.

• Logical Reasoning: analytical reasoning, logical sequences, arguments, assumptions, and critical reasoning, the highest weighted section at 70 marks.

If you are preparing for CLAT and AILET together, the reading and reasoning foundations overlap heavily. The main difference is that AILET does not have a separate quantitative techniques section of the size CLAT carries, and AILET packs more weight into Logical Reasoning.

AILET admit card

NLU Delhi releases the AILET admit card on the official website. For AILET 2027, the admit card releases on November 30, 2026. Download it by logging in with your registration ID and password, then check your name, category, photograph, and exam centre carefully. The university does not send physical copies, so carry a printed admit card and a valid photo ID to the exam hall.

AILET answer key

After the exam, NLU Delhi publishes a provisional answer key and opens a short window for candidates to raise objections against specific questions. It then releases the final answer key after reviewing valid objections, and the result is prepared on that basis. In the 2026 cycle, the provisional key came out on exam day, December 14, 2025, and the final key followed on December 18, 2025, alongside the result.

AILET result

The AILET result is declared on the official NLU Delhi website, usually within days of the exam. AILET 2026 results were declared on December 18, 2025, just four days after the exam, for both UG and PG. The AILET 2027 result is expected in the last week of December 2026. AILET cut off

AILET cut offs are published as closing ranks in each counselling merit list, not as a single fixed mark. The cut off is the rank of the last candidate admitted in a category in a given round, and it shifts every year with the number of applicants and the difficulty of the paper.

In the General category, the closing rank has hovered around AIR 60 to 71 across recent cycles. As a practical target, aim for a score in the region of 100 or above out of 150 to be competitive for a General category BA LLB seat, and adjust down for reserved categories based on the ranks above.

AILET seats at NLU Delhi

NLU Delhi offers 120 seats in its BA LLB (Hons) programme through AILET. Of these, 110 are merit seats across categories and 10 are supernumerary seats reserved for Foreign Nationals and OCI or PIO candidates. The one-year LLM programme and the PhD programme have their own smaller intakes.

The small seat count against a very large applicant pool is exactly why AILET is considered tougher, seat for seat, than CLAT.

AILET versus CLAT: how tough is it?

CLAT is the Common Law Admission Test accepted by more than two dozen national law universities, with several thousand seats in total. AILET leads to a single institution, NLU Delhi, with around 120 BA LLB seats. When you compare applicants per seat, AILET is the more competitive of the two. AILET also runs a slightly different paper: three sections, heavy on Logical Reasoning, with no large quantitative section.
